According to Wiki, an Easter Egg is an intentional inside joke, hidden message, or feature in a work such as a computer program, movie, book, or crossword.
Originally started as bonus feature in the Atart 2600 video game "Adventure", the first instance of people using the term "Easter Egg" just featured the names of the creators embedded in the game's code in a secret room. Not only was it the first Easter Egg, it was also the first game to truly feature credits. While this was the first Easter Egg to be found by players, it was found in 2004 that there had been an earlier game on the Fairchild Channel F console in 1978 that also showed the game creator's name.
Over the years, the concept of the Easter Egg has grown to be visual cues, but not all Easter Eggs were visual. Some Easter Eggs were just undocumented access to other parts of the program, something that helped the programmer maneuver in and around their program without having to go through conventional methods.
In addition, Easter Eggs don't even have to be displayed on a screen. Some Eggs are actually printed. Disneyland prides itself on incorporating the iconic 3 circle shape of Mickey Mouse in almost everything inside Disneyland, from the flowerbed at the entrance of the park to the very subtle Mickey on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at the place where the skeletons are on the bed with the gold; the Mickey is on the headboard.
But to most people, Easter Eggs are things hidden in movies and games. Whether it's waiting until the end of the credits of your favorite movie to see that one scene that sets up future movies, or running along in your favorite game and somehow you see a reference to Dr. Who when Dr. Who doesn't exist at all in that universe.
So what does that mean for this site? It means the sky is the limit. We will explore everything beyond the surface…the hidden things that people put in productions that make us say, "A ha!". We will go behind the scenes and talk to people and how they put their likenesses in the things they work on.
We long to make our mark in this world and some people do it by "signing" their work as Easter Eggs.
So in honor of Easter Eggs everywhere…we will start incorporating our logo in EVERY picture we publish on this site. We'll start with a simple one, enjoy!
